ANKA KOZIEL QUARTET
Jazz Singer Anka Koziel was born in Poland, but currently lives in Holland. She graduated with high grades at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague where she studied with Rachel Gould. During the conservatory education she had the opportunity to study and to perform with vocalists like Jeanne Lee, Mark Murphy, Deborah Brown, Judy Niemack and instrumentalists like Barry Harris, Michael Brecker,Dave Liebman, James Moody and many more. Currently, Anka herself is one of the teachers at this prestigious conservatory and regularly performs with the famous latin jazz band Nueva Manteca and with The Hague Ethospheric Orchestra (THEO) featuring Holland's best jazz musicians like Eric Vloeimans, Frits Landesbergen and Jesse van Ruller (winner of the Thelonious Monk Award 1995).The Anka Koziel Quartet was thrown together in 2003 for the performance at the Dutch Jazz Competition semi-finals. Having three different musicians from various European countries with different temperaments added a lot of vitality and spice to the music, and the concept worked! The quartet continued to perform together for some years during their conservatoire studies.
In 2008 the quartet recorded the debut album 'Tales of the Forest' which had been well received by the media and colleagues. The cd is a collection of some beautiful and impressive pieces: two jazz versions of two songs of Chopin, traditional Polish folk songs and Anka’s own composition ‘Forest Tale’ are combined with stunning improvisation and experimental aspects of a high international level. Anka is accompanied by Michal Vanoucek, jazz pianist and conductor from Slovakia and Dutch Deloitte Jazz laureate of 2008; Brice Soniano, jazz & contemporary bassist from France; and Oriol Roca, jazz drummer, also active in the Spanish pop, hip-hop and classical scenes.
